trailer travel

Bits and bites on traveling with our Trillium trailer. This is a very frugal way of traveling, providing we can find places to do some boon docking... HOWEVER THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME SO FAR, WE HAVE FOUND OURSELVES IN CAMPSITES, WHICH CAN ADD UP VERY QUICKLY IN ACCOMMODATION COSTS.

Waterproofing a trillium

Here are some photos of the work we did to waterproof our 1973 Trillium.

We removed all the windows, replaced all the window frames, then placed the windows back in with a layer of Butle all around the window, to seal it into place.

First though, the trailer had to be cleaned, which took much elbow grease and a lot of sunshine. I discovered a Facebook page for these types of fibreglass trailers, which came to my rescue so many times. I would post a question, and would have an answer within hours... Thank you Facebook!

Making sure the trailer hitch works properly.

I ended up replacing the hitch, because I discovered that the hitch which was the original from the 70's was not locking to the ball of my car. In other words, the trailer could have come loose at any time. I brought it in, and had the ball bearings done as well, which ended up costing around $1,200 to fix, not a cheap fix!

Electricity.

Another item I spent money and time on was the electrical. First I had to make sure that the signal and brake lights were working, and they were not! I am happy to report that this has been updated. The trailer can run on 12V. or AC. The tricky part when traveling is finding ways to charge the 12 V. battery when we are off grid. I had 7 way wiring installed to my car so that we could charge the 12V. when we were driving, but when we were stopped, no more juice. The answer to that would be solar of course. But do I want to invest in solar power for this trailer, not sure. I am seriously considering going to a Mercedes Sprinter van, and forgetting about towing all together. I must admit though, that I love the airstreams!!!
